If you’re like me you are filled with self doubt and criticism. I have been a knitter, crocheter, CRAFTER for years – but never EVER thought my work was good enough to make money from. I, like many people, compare myself WAY too much to others. I compare just about every aspect of my crazy and imperfect life to the magically perfect and insanely peaceful lives of those around me. I know I’m not the only one who does this – am I? Of course not! We all want to be better than we feel we are.
I am a perfectionist by nature and I am my own WORST enemy. I look at the creations of others in my field and think “WOW, that looks AMAZING!!!” or “I wish my stuff came out this nice!” I am super hard on myself! If I don’t like how a product is turning out; even by one tiny, insignificant, barely noticeable, can hardly be called a mistake, I will rip it all out and start over. Or at least rip out to the point that is bothering me! I can’t possibly be the only one that does this.
Last night I was listening to Kari Chapin’s podcast, AIM while I was working on my website. She was talking about this VERY THING! How grateful I am to know that someone as successful as Kari goes through the same insecurities that I do! What a RELIEF! Kari was talking about how horrible of a boss she is to herself and I could not agree more! I am down right AWFUL and I would NEVER work for someone else who treated me as poorly as I treat myself. It was a moment of clarity for sure! I often listen to uplifting music to keep my mind focused on the positive in life and one of my favorite songs is The Voice of Truth by Casting Crowns.
Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant
With just a sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors
Shaking in their armor
Wishing they’d have had the strength to stand
But the giant’s calling out my name
And he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times
I’ve tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again. “Boy you’ll never win!”
“You’ll never win!”
But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, “Do not be afraid!”
The voice of truth says, “This is for My glory”
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

This year I want to listen to the voice of truth. God gave me the talents that have led to this wonderful business. He provided a way for me to express myself through creating wonderful works of art. They are ART with yarn is the medium! I am good enough. My product ARE good. I am not perfect, but I don’t HAVE to be! No one is requiring perfection. So no more “DOUBTY MCDOUTERSON” for this girl! I will create and it will be wonderful! I will be kinder to myself this year and I will be the kind of boss (to myself) that I would actually work for!
There are so many voices pulling at us each day, MANY of them negative. We can chose to listen to the ones telling us we aren’t good enough or we aren’t as good as so-and-so. No more “you’ll never win!” because I will win. I was born with greatness, we all were. I will chose to listen to the voice of truth that tells me I am great and the ones that tell me how wonderful my products are! I will listen to the voices that praise – because I am good enough!
